High School Social Studies Teacher and Advisor
Mt. Scott Learning Center is a unique, community-oriented school that serves middle school and high school students who have not been successful in the traditional learning environment. The school is seeking a full time Social Studies teacher to work with high school age students in our accredited, diploma-based program.
The teacher will be responsible for developing a highly differentiated social studies curriculum and for providing instruction in academic classes as well as an advisory group. Applicants should be knowledgeable in several social studies content areas and should be experienced with creating engaging curriculum. The position requires that the teacher maintains regular contact with parents or guardians of an advisory group of students while providing support, mentorship and academic counseling for those students. Ideal candidates will have experience working with diverse groups of students who have struggled in the traditional school environment. Strong classroom management skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students of different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds are a must.

- GRADE LEVEL(S): High School (Grades 9-12)
- FLSA STATUS: Exempt. 1.0 full-time, 40 hours per week, 8/22/2017-6/14/2018
- STARTING SALARY RANGE: $2,666 – $4,000 per month (12 months), depending on qualifications. Oregon teaching license preferred but not required. Medical and dental insurance included. 401K plan available. Contracted work days equal 190 days per year.

Teaching Role, to include:
- Developing engaging curriculum and instruction aligned to the Common Core State Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies
- Design assignments, assessments and lessons to advance student toward state and national benchmarks
- Differentiate instruction to accommodate students with a variety of learning styles and skills
- Provide effective classroom management; embed the teaching of social skills and student success skills into classes
- Build in a variety of instructional modes and teaching techniques into daily lessons
- Maintain attendance and academic records, such as regular progress reports and grade reports
- Participate as an active and generative team member with colleagues; devote energy and expertise to student and school improvement
- Maintain visibility, awareness and contribute to supervision during non-structured time, field trips, community events

- Maintain regular contact with parents or guardians of advisees while providing support, mentorship and academic counseling for those advisees.
- Develop individual relationships with advisees and provide referrals, support, or informal guidance as needed
- Assist advisees with academic planning and goal setting
- Design instruction for and/or facilitate effective and engaging lessons for advisory periods
Advisor Role, to include:
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- At least two years of classroom teaching experience with preference given to candidates who have experience working with students of different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds
- Current teaching license (Oregon or another state) with certification within the subject area of secondary Social Studies
- Commitment to culturally-responsive teaching practices and respectful relationship-building with students, staff and families
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to take initiative, prioritize, plan, organize
- Effective problem prevention and problem-solving skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
- Must successfully pass local school district and/or Oregon Department of Education fingerprint-based background check
- Multi-lingual and bi-cultural candidates highly preferred
- Masters degree in Education or related field
- Experience with Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, Restorative Justice practices and Courageous Conversations protocols
- Clean driving record
