Mt. Scott High School's partnership with PlayWrite, Inc. kicked off its sixth season with another successful two-week workshop February 21 through March 4. The program culminated in a final performance on March 8 at Theater! Theatre! (3430 SE Belmont).
The playwriting workshop teamed eight Mt. Scott students with professional actors in a carefully structured two-week residency where students meet both individually and in groups. The 2 ½ hour daily exercises utilized the tools, expertise and guidance of the PlayWrite coaches, while sparking the creativity and emotional depth of each student. The scripts are exclusively written by the students, with the coaches encouraging the creative process through reflection and revision.
The rousing, emotional and humorous pieces were the result of many long hours of hard work on the part of all participants. Upon reflection, students spoke highly of the workshop and felt more confident and empowered from this experience. The students’ personal connections with the coaches generated an in-depth writing experience, developed tools of the creative arts, and inspired pride in seeing their pieces performed on stage.
Mt. Scott student "PlayWrites" this year included Austin Butler, Morgan Gaffney, Alejandra Gonzalez, Kyla McNiven, Sage Paden, Carlie Shaw, Cooper Solano and Alvin Swearingen.
